Write something motivational on your gym sneakers. Your wedding date, your goal weight—anything that will remind you each time you eye them in the closet.

Sign up for a 5k so you have something to work towards. Already a 5k-er? Try a 10k . . .

If you’re a morning exerciser, put your workout clothes on as soon as you get out of bed—or better yet, fall asleep in them.

Whenever you plan to work out—but then cancel on your plan—put a buck in a “Regrets” jar. Getting fit should be expensive if that’s what takes you to move. (Use that money later for a Zumba class or a post-workout smoothie).

Caught an illness of some sort? If what’s got you down is all above your neck, it’s probably okay to exercise—just take it easy. Otherwise, take the day off.

Get achy ankles when you run? Dirt paths are easier on your joints than pavement. Soak them in Epsom salt to get rid of pain post-run.

Gym memberships are often overpriced. Invest in dumbbells, a yoga mat, and exercise DVDs. Mix those at-home sessions with runs outside, and you’ll see a difference in your physique and wallet.

Tape a pic of your former skinny self to the inside of the pantry, so you’re forced to ask . . . Cheez-Its or chiseled stomach? Which do I prefer?

Crunches hurt your neck? Press your tongue to the roof of your mouth to help align your noggin.

Forget about the number on the scale and notice the changes in your body with a measuring tape.
